Working With Electronic Health Records: Practical Insights for Pathologists

This activity is intended for pathologists who want to build foundational knowledge in informatics and technology found in today’s medical laboratory.


Rereleased Activity
This activity was originally released as Working With EHRs: Practical Insights for Pathologists (SAM Eligible) and was available between December 28, 2016 and December 27, 2019. The content was reviewed and an updated version of the activity titled, Working with Electronic Heath Records: Practical Insights for Pathologists (FREE) was released on August 27, 2020 and January 3, 2022. In July of 2021, another content review was completed and the course was rereleased under the same name in the Fall of 2021.


Description
This activity will help practicing pathologists gain fundamental knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) in their everyday practice. This activity is divided into five modules and will address the need pathologists have to understand fundamental EHR concepts such as federal program requirements, EHR roles and functions, standards, protocols, and implementation challenges, patient safety issues in the handling of laboratory test orders and results, and correct formatting of reports. The participants do not need to have prior knowledge of EHRs as this activity will provide fundamental EHR concepts relevant to their roles as pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Cite examples of the fundamental roles and functions of EHRs and where they fit in the health care environment.
  2. Explain different standards and protocols applicable to EHRs and discuss potential challenges in implementing them in the laboratory.
  3. Identify patient safety issues and challenges in EHR handling of laboratory test orders.
  4. Identify patient safety issues and challenges in EHR handling of laboratory test results.
  5. Provide appropriate input to information systems personnel to ensure that reports are formatted correctly.
