Immersive Learning Programs from the CAP: Going Beyond Theoretical Knowledge

Laboratory medicine and technology change rapidly, as do the job demands and assignments pathologists handle. Residency programs may provide an introduction to many areas of the vast field of laboratory medicine, but they don’t always provide all the tools, training, and experience pathologists need to ensure better patient care.

To help you get ready to succeed in the next step in your career, the CAP offers three immersive learning programs that help ensure success. Options are available for each program to fit the amount of time you have available to invest in earning continuing medical education (CME) credits. The content of each program addresses current scientific knowledge/thought but also offers training on practical application of that knowledge for your daily practice.

Laboratory Medical Direction (LMD)

Prepare yourself to assume the role of laboratory medical director. The Laboratory Medical Direction program focuses on the practical skills, tools, and techniques that you can implement in your laboratory to ensure more effective and efficient laboratory operations and better patient care. Learn how to meet compliance and regulatory expectations, lead and manage a team, and communicate effectively across teams. Participants can complete the series of seven online courses alone for 18 CME or also attend a 1-1/2-day in-person workshop with expert faculty and other attendees for small group work to learn practical application for an additional 12 CME, or 30 CME total.

Multidisciplinary Breast Pathology (MBP)

Faculty include experts in breast pathology, oncology, surgery, and radiology to provide participants with an entire clinical picture of multidisciplinary care. Participants can complete six online courses for 10.5 CME and attend a virtual workshop over four half-days with faculty and other attendees to optimize their approach in the precision patient care team for an additional 12 CME, or 22.5 CME total.
