Staff from laboratories participating in the VPBS-B 2026 Virtual Peripheral Blood Smear Surveys program can individually earn CE credit reading the Participant Summary, accessed online or within this activity, and answering online learning assessment questions. The online learning assessment questions are designed to reinforce concepts and discussion points presented in the reading.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the diagnostic criteria and common clinical presentation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
  2. Identify the clinical, morphological, and common laboratory features of AML with mutated NPM1.
  3. Understand the pathogenesis of AML with mutated NPM1 and underlying genetic aberration.
  4. Describe how ancillary molecular tests are used to confirm and further investigate cases of AML.
