Molecular Genomic Oncology for the Practicing Surgical Pathologist
Pricing: Member: $50.00 NonMember: $65.00 Junior Member: $10.00
Intended Audience
This anatomic pathology activity is intended for pathologists who have basic-to-moderate knowledge and skills in molecular genomics and want to sharpen their skills in supporting clinicians who have questions about oncology specimens.
Rereleased Activity
This activity originally released as Molecular Genomic Oncology for the Practicing Surgical Pathologist and was available between April 23, 2020, and April 22, 2023. The content was reviewed in September 2022.
Description
Community pathologists are often called on to answer questions regarding oncology testing which typically represents only a fraction of their practice. Staying up-to-date in this fast-changing field is challenging. This activity is designed to provide up-to-date information, but also teach pathologists how to find the evidence-based information when it changes. In addition, it explains concepts to aid the pathologist’s medical judgement in cases where either guidelines are not applicable, or a treating clinician wants to treat “off-guideline.”
The goal of this activity is to improve the ability of community pathologists to answer genomics questions related to oncology specimens. Several of the topics were chosen based on direct questions from community pathologists. This activity was originally presented at CAP19 under the same title.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Advise clinicians about the best test to order and choose the best specimen for testing.
- Recommend specific genomic testing for common solid tumors.
- Recommend specific genomic testing for challenging scenarios related to hematologic malignancies.
- Discuss the significance of variants of undetermined significance with clinicians.
