Interfaces and Middleware: Laboratory Information System (LIS) Connectivity Options That Can Improve and Streamline Laboratory Operations
This activity is intended for pathologists.
Rereleased Activity
This activity originally released as Interfaces and Middleware: Laboratory Information System (LIS) Connectivity Options That Can Improve and Streamline Laboratory Operations and was available between December 13, 2021 and December 19, 2025. The content was reviewed in March of 2024.
Description
This activity will introduce you to the advanced topics related to laboratory information systems (LIS) including middleware. A review of standard interfaces will enable you to better understand your laboratory set-up and requirements. Ultimately, a better understanding of the topics in this activity will help you contribute to your LIS development and maintenance efforts.
This activity consists of three modules:
- Interfaces – learn about the types of interfaces and their role in the transmission of patient data.
- Middleware Functionality – learn about the capabilities and challenges of and costs related to middleware.
- Setting Up Middleware – learn about the typical steps involved in the set-up process.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Identify the major instrument interface standards and their capabilities and limitations.
- Describe middleware and how it supports efficiencies in the laboratory environment.
- Describe the steps to set up a typical middleware system.
