How to Effectively Handle the Three Common Medical Liver Pathology Cases
Pricing: Member: $40.00 NonMember: $52.00 Junior Member: $10.00
Intended Audience
This anatomic pathology activity is intended for pathologists who have basic to moderate knowledge and skills in liver biopsy interpretation and want to develop their skills in examining and identifying patterns in liver injuries.
Description
This activity helps pathologists stay abreast of ongoing diagnostic learning by focusing on a pattern-based approach of examining liver injury to assist in making diagnoses. Emphasis is given to three patterns of liver biopsy (fatty liver, hepatitis, and cholestatic) and their unique differential diagnoses. More than one pattern may exist in a sample and a systematic approach to analyzing every sample can lead to more accurate assessments including reducing the risk of missed findings (bile duct loss, NRH or sinusoidal infiltration by malignancy). This activity focuses on the foundational importance of recognizing a normal liver biopsy.
This activity was presented at the 2024 CAP Pathology in the Mountains as part of the activity How to Effectively Handle the Three Common Medical Liver Pathology Cases.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe a pattern-based approach to liver biopsy interpretation.
- Describe three patterns of injury that are most common in our clinical practice.
- Identify the biliary tract disease pattern of injury.
- Discuss the differential diagnosis for each of these patterns of injury.
