AQ-B 2023: When Is an Arterial Blood Gas Analyzer Better Than a Laboratory Analyzer?

All laboratory personnel from a laboratory that participated in the AQ-B 2023 Critical Care Blood Gas Surveys program may complete this activity.

Description
Staff from laboratories participating in the AQ-B 2023 Critical Care Blood Gas Surveys program can individually earn CE credit by reading the Participant Summary (mailed to the institution or accessed online) and answering online learning assessment questions. The online learning assessment questions are designed to reinforce concepts and discussion points presented in the reading.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Understand current technology and test menus for arterial blood gas (ABG) and whole blood analysis.
  2. Appreciate the benefits of analyzing whole blood at the point-of-care as compared with analysis of plasma or serum on laboratory chemistry analyzers.
  3. Understand the preanalytic factors that impact the quality and accuracy of ABG tests.

CE (Continuing Education for nonphysicians): The CAP designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 credit(s) of continuing education. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity is approved for continuing education credit in the states of California and Florida.

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) accepts this activity to meet the continuing education requirements.
