Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Description
Patient blood management (PBM) is a multidisciplinary approach to patient care that reflects the risks, benefits, and alternatives of transfusion. Providers should be familiar with PBM and how these concepts can fit into daily practice. Implementation of PBM initiatives such as blood conservation and anemia management have the potential to improve patient outcomes.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe elements of an overarching patient blood management program and the utilization data necessary to inform its implementation.
  2. Compare blood conservation techniques used in the operating room.
  3. Evaluate how electronic computer order entry assistance may guide evidence-based blood product ordering practices.
  4. Assess the benefits of preoperative anemia management and the related interventions that are available.
