Description
This activity provides an understanding of the human genome, from its fundamental structure in chromatin to its organized form in chromosomes, and its behavior during mitosis and cell division. Cytogenetics studies of patient cases in conjunction with other clinical findings will allow participants to explore the consequences of dysregulated mitosis and chromosome aberrations. Furthermore, it will provide better understanding of the lab workflow and the utility and limitations of various cytogenetics screening and diagnostic tests. This activity equips pathologists with critical scenarios emphasizing the need for prompt and effective communication with physicians and health care providers to optimize care for patients and support for their families.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

1. Define optimal pre-analytical handling procedures for cytogenetics specimens and describe procedures to inform and correct specimen integrity issues.
2. Describe the normal phases of mitosis, chromosome organization, and function.
3. Interpret mitotic figures and proliferative indices in clinical context correlating histology, and other oncologic markers.
4. Distinguish screening tests from conclusive diagnostic testing and recognize their limitations.
5. Outline appropriate referral pathways to specialists, including genetic counselors and other health care providers, when chromosomal aberrations are detected.
