Description
This CPIP course is essential for pathologists to grasp the intricacies of helping clinicians serve as a laboratory director of provider-performed microscopy (PPM) testing according to CLIA ‘88 requirements. Understanding role prerequisites is crucial, especially in near-patient settings where non-laboratory personnel conduct PPM tests but where pathologists often serve as CLIA directors or as advisors to CLIA directors.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

1. Identify the test complexity level of PPM, as defined in Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) ‘88.
2. Define the prerequisites for the roles as the PPM lab director and PPM test operator.
3. List the six CLIA requirements for competency assessment.
4. Apply the requirements of proficiency testing to effectively meet CLIA ‘88.
