Description
Transfusion of blood components is common amongst hospitalized patients. Although often necessary for patients’ survival, these transfusions also pose considerable risk of which treating physicians should be aware. This activity describes different types of febrile reactions patients may experience following administration of blood components.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

1. Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms and laboratory findings that can differentiate between febrile non-hemolytic reactions and immune-mediated hemolytic reactions in patients who develop a fever during transfusion.
2. Describe the immediate steps to manage a suspected febrile transfusion reaction both at the bedside and in the blood bank.
3. Identify what each test performed in a transfusion reaction workup helps rule in or rule out.
