Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
Babesiosis, a disease caused by an intraerythrocytic parasite, leads to a spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from mild flu-like illness to severe intravascular hemolysis, particularly in patients who are splenectomized, immunocompromised, or with underlying health conditions. Babesiosis spread is closely tied to the distribution of its tick vectors, which vary geographically, contributing to regional differences in disease prevalence. This CPIP explores peripheral blood smear diagnosis, life cycle, and indications for and performance of red cell exchange transfusion in patients with severe babesiosis.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Identify Babesia spp. on a peripheral blood smear.
- Perform a consultation for red cell exchange via apheresis in a case of severe babesiosis.
- Describe the blood donation and transfusion implications of babesiosis infection.
