Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
Blood products are deemed both a biological and a drug by the Food and Drug Administration, being that they are derived from human donors and therefore subject to unique risks therein. Transfusion safety is paramount to patient care. Reporting of factors that could negatively impact the safety, purity, and potency of blood products, and adverse events related to transfusion is critical at the local, regional, and national levels. Monitoring such events improves future safety and allows for risks to be mitigated at a population level. Blood banks are subject to ample regulatory oversight, and the pursuit of additional accreditation provides credibility and enhances patient safety and quality.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Differentiate between regulatory and accreditation requirements and describe elements of each.
- Define biological product deviation (BPD) and differentiate BPD events that are reportable to the Food and Drug Administration versus those that are not.
- Evaluate a possible transfusion-related death and describe the process for reporting it to the Food and Drug Administration.
