Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
Peripheral blood lymphocytosis is a common finding with a broad differential diagnosis including benign and neoplastic entities. Common lymphoid malignancies may initially present with peripheral blood lymphocytosis. This activity addresses the importance of recognizing abnormal lymphocyte morphology and further ensuring that appropriate ancillary studies for diagnosis and prognostic risk stratification are performed, enabling cost-effective and high-quality patient care. As peripheral blood smear morphologic assessment forms the foundation of a complex diagnostic work up, it remains an important core competency for both the general and subspecialized pathologist.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- List causes of absolute lymphocytosis.
- Compare clinical and morphologic features of common benign and malignant processes that present with an absolute lymphocytosis.
- Describe the optimal workup for T-cell large granular cell leukemia.
- Differentiate between monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
- Recommend appropriate ancillary testing for prognosis and treatment of CLL.
