Description
Monocytic neoplasms may present in a variety of ways and mimic other hematologic malignancies or a reactive inflammatory process. The pathologist plays a crucial role in ensuring the use of appropriate diagnostic and prognostic ancillary studies to enable timely identification and facilitate prompt initiation of the appropriate therapy. This activity reviews the appropriate workup of monocytic proliferations which includes the recently updated World Health Organization and International Consensus Classification criteria. The enhanced knowledge base of the pathologists diagnosing monocytic neoplasms will ensure an up-to-date, accurate foundation to inform clinical decision making.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

1. Describe the updated 5th edition World Health Organization and International Consensus Classification criteria for the diagnosis of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML).
2. Explain the appropriate use of ancillary studies to separate CMML from other myeloid neoplasms with a monocytic component, as well as reactive processes.
