Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
Healthcare system and hospital mergers have accelerated in the last two decades and it is likely that most pathologists will be involved in at least one such transition throughout their career. Hospital acquisitions and mergers are often stressful for all parties involved and have the potential to put patients at risk if not executed correctly. Pathologists should enter an acquisition or merger prepared to facilitate a smooth transition to ensure continuity of high-quality patient care. This activity will explore important considerations and challenges for the blood bank laboratory in acquisitions and mergers.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- List important questions the blood bank director should raise as a key stakeholder involved in a hospital merger or acquisition.
- Identify federal compliance and regulatory issues that impact information technology in the blood bank.
- Describe how to implement an interhospital blood component inventory management system.
- Differentiate interlaboratory harmonization and standardization in relation to standard operating procedures, instrumentation, and reference ranges
