Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
Type O red blood cells are chronically in short supply. These units can be transfused to virtually any patient, however, only 45% of the donor population is type O. Discover and evaluate methods to optimize the use of precious type O red blood cells to support patients and prevent shortages for the hospital and community.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe the distribution of O Rh+ (D-antigen present) and O Rh- (D-antigen absent) red cell types in the United States population.
- Describe the alloimmunization risk when D+ red cells are transfused to D- patients.
- List the appropriate actions for transfusion services to take to deal with a limited supply of O cells.
- List actions that blood collection establishments can undertake to efficiently collect and manage O inventory.
- Develop communication and mitigation strategies to deal with immediate blood group O national shortage.
