Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
Symptoms of a mild, influenza-like illness that appear 3 to 17 days after histoplasmosis exposure may be misidentified as other viral infections in the absence of specific testing. While most histoplasmosis cases resolve without treatment, some patients develop chronic pulmonary infections or disseminated disease. Pathologists need to identify who is at risk for histoplasmosis and how to effectively diagnose the disease.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Explain when to include histoplasmosis in the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with symptoms of a pulmonary infection (eg, COVID-19).
- Explain how histoplasmosis is acquired in the United States.
- Describe the best methods for diagnosing histoplasmosis.
- Differentiate the histologic appearance of histoplasmosis from other entities in the differential diagnosis.
