Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Fundamentals

This activity is intended for pathologists in anatomic or clinical laboratories with current or future responsibilities in using and defining information system applications.


Rereleased Activity
This activity originally released as Laboratory Information Systems Fundamentals (SAM eligible) and was available between February 26, 2015 and February 25, 2018. The content was reviewed in December 2017 and an updated version of the activity titled, Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Fundamentals was released between February 26, 2018, and February 25, 2021. A full review of course content was completed in 2021 in preparation for rerelease later in the year.


Description
This activity provides a high level view to the design, architecture, and functionality of various information systems in anatomic and clinical pathology laboratories.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. List the major functions of Laboratory Information Systems (LISs).
  2. Describe the roles of dictionaries and worksheets in LISs.
  3. Explain how LISs are central to data management and operations in the laboratory.
  4. Contrast the key differences between clinical laboratory and anatomic pathology LISs.
