Interfaces and Middleware: Laboratory Information System (LIS) Connectivity Options That Can Improve and Streamline Laboratory Operations

This activity is intended for pathologists who want to build foundational knowledge in informatics and technology found in today’s medical laboratory.

Rereleased Activity
This activity originally released as Interfaces and Middleware and was available between 2009 and 2012. The activity was not available between 2012 and 2016, and was reinstated between 2017 to 2018. In 2018, the content was updated and the activity rereleased as free content under the title, Interfaces and Middleware: Laboratory Information System (LIS) Connectivity Options That Can Improve and Streamline Laboratory Operations. The content was reviewed in March of 2021 and the activity was rereleased on December 6, 2021.

Description
This activity will introduce you to the advanced topics related to lab information systems (LIS) including middleware. A review of standard interfaces will enable you to better understand your laboratory set-up and requirements. Ultimately, a better understanding of the topics in this activity will help you to contribute to your LIS development and maintenance efforts.

This activity consists of three modules:

  • Interfaces – learn about the types of interfaces and their role in the transmission of patient data.
  • Middleware Functionality – learn about the capabilities and challenges of and costs related to middleware.
  • Setting Up Middleware – learn about the typical steps involved in the set-up process.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the major instrument interface standards and their capabilities and limitations.
  2. Describe middleware and how it supports efficiencies in the laboratory environment.
  3. Describe the steps to set up a typical middleware system.

CME/CE Information
This activity does not offer CME or CE credit.

A letter of participation will be awarded upon completion of the activity.
