What’s in a Name? Serous Neoplasms of the Ovary and Fallopian Tube: Classification Updates, Conundrums, and Outcomes

Pricing: Member: $70.00 NonMember: $91.00 Junior Member: $10.00

Intended Audience
This anatomic pathology activity is intended for practicing pathologists, as well as pathology trainees.

Description
The practicing pathologist, whether in a community or academic setting, commonly encounters serous neoplasms of the ovary and fallopian tube. However, correct application of updated nomenclature which can alter patient management can be challenging. Keep up to date with diagnostic learning. This activity covers diagnostic dilemmas using a case study method, starting at the frozen section/case presentation and ending with the final diagnosis. It covers areas such as serous cystadenomas with proliferation versus borderline tumors, sampling, and diagnosis of tumors with micropapillary architecture, and features of low-grade carcinoma including implant classification. Learners will review problematic cases of high-grade serous carcinoma, including diagnosis and reporting of post-neoadjuvant high-grade serous carcinoma, overlap with low-grade carcinoma, and diagnostic features of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma. Each case is used to instruct about recent updates to the World Health Organization classification, molecular characteristics which can be exploited in routine practice for diagnosis and clinical management, and implications of diagnosis for patient outcomes and treatment.

This activity was originally presented at CAP22.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize and apply the classification scheme for serous neoplasms of the ovary and fallopian tube.
  2. Integrate ancillary diagnostic testing appropriately to maximize patient outcomes.
  3. Differentiate clinical management and outcomes for patients based on diagnosis.
