Ten Perinatal Diagnoses You Don’t Want to Miss and Why

Pricing: Member: $40.00 NonMember: $52.00 Junior Member: $10.00

Intended Audience
This anatomic pathology activity is intended for pathologists who have basic to moderate knowledge and skills in gynecological pathology and want to develop their skills in perinatal, gynecologic, and obstetric pathology.

Description
Most pregnancies and placental evaluations are within normal ranges and without concern for complications or necessary interventions. Awareness of placental pathologies affecting the mother and infant can explain poor outcomes in the infant, aid in future pregnancies, provide early diagnosis and intervention, and prepare for effective monitoring for the mother and infant. This activity will identify ten perinatal diagnoses: chronic histiocytic intervillositis, massive perivillous fibrin deposition (maternal floor infarct), candida placentitis, CMV placentitis, maternal vascular malperfusion, massive villous edema, inborn errors of metabolism, fetal vascular malperfusion, meconium myonecrosis, and basal plate myometrial fibers. By the end of the activity, attendees will be able to identify symptoms common to each perinatal diagnosis and interventions to help mediate risks in the mother and infant.

This activity was presented at CAP21 as part of the activity Focus on Gynecologic Pathology: Advanced Answers for Daily Practice.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Diagnose maternal and fetal vascular malperfusion in the placenta and know their clinical significance.
  2. Know critical values in placental diagnoses including candida placentitis and inborn errors of metabolism.
  3. Identify a differential diagnosis for chronic villitis.
