Description
This activity focuses on inflammatory disorders of the esophagus, including common entities such as gastroesophageal reflux disease an eosinophilic esophagitis, and rarer diagnoses such as lymphocytic esophagitis and lichen planus pattern of injury. It is intended for surgical pathologists who have moderate skills in gastrointestinal pathology and for upper-level pathology trainees.
This activity was originally presented at Pathology in the Park in 2022.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Diagnose subtle examples of reflux esophagitis.
- Apply histologic criteria and clinical features to differentiate between eosinophilic esophagitis pattern of injury and reflux esophagitis.
- Categorize patterns of lymphocytic infiltration in the esophagus, and differentiate between lichen planus and lymphocytic esophagitis patterns of injury.
- Diagnose esophagitis dissecans superficialis (sloughing esophagitis).
- Diagnose and report medication-related esophageal injury.
