Intended Audience
This informatics pathology activity is intended for to medical directors, pathologists, and residents.
Description
An ordering clinician complains that a patient with newly diagnosed endometrial carcinoma should have been screened for Lynch syndrome, but she was not. Your laboratory reviews its internal test ordering patterns and finds that a substantial proportion of patients meeting screening criteria are never tested. How can you arrange computer systems and laboratory practices to ensure that every patient meeting a given set of criteria gets their expected care? This case explains how informatics-based approaches support population health in the laboratory.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Identify the hallmarks, or “five rights,” of good clinical decision support (CDS) design.
- Explain what distinguishes population health management (PHM) from CDS.
- Describe the process of creating a CDS or PHM intervention.
- Describe “defense in depth” as a design principle in safety and error prevention.
