Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
Pathologists must collaborate with institutional stakeholders (eg, infectious disease physicians, infection prevention) to choose a C. difficile testing algorithm. Despite technologic advances, optimal testing methods for pathogens that are also associated with an asymptomatic carrier state are elusive. Testing algorithms used to diagnose C. difficile infection vary across institutions with persistent debate regarding the best practice. This activity will discuss optimal preanalytic test criteria and methods to support the diagnosis of a C. difficile infection, so pathologists are prepared to guide a diagnostic approach that all stakeholders find acceptable
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology and pathophysiology of Clostridioides difficile infection.
- Compare the advantages and disadvantages of test methods available for diagnosing C. difficile infection.
- Summarize C. difficile treatment and infection prevention.
