Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
The distinction between type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is extremely important. Not uncommonly, the patient’s clinical presentation may not discriminate T1D and T2D. To resolve this challenge, the presence of islet autoantibodies can support the diagnosis of T1D. Islet autoantibodies can also predict the development of T1D.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Define the clinical and laboratory features that distinguish type 1 diabetes (T1D) from type 2 diabetes (T2D).
- List the reasons why the diagnosis of T1D is clinically important in the management of affected patients.
- Consult with clinicians on the selection of islet autoantibody tests for the diagnosis of T1D.
- Explain the pros and cons of the application of islet autoantibody screening in the prediction of T1D.
