Staff from laboratories participating in the VBDM-A 2026 Vector-Borne Disease Molecular Surveys program can individually earn CE credit reading the Participant Summary, accessed online or within this activity, and answering online learning assessment questions. The online learning assessment questions are designed to reinforce concepts and discussion points presented in the reading.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the morphologic features used for identifying medically important hard ticks at the genus level.
  2. Describe the appropriate treatment for Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF).
  3. List viruses that may be transmitted by ticks in North America.
  4. Recognize the differing treatment strategies for tick-borne diseases.
  5. Recognize key features used to differentiate Babesia species from Plasmodium falciparum on thick and thin blood films.
