Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Description
In this activity, the basics of the complex molecular nomenclature system will be clarified, and some common but important molecular testing pitfalls will be explored. Learning how to accurately read and interpret a molecular testing report will strengthen the anatomic or clinical pathologist’s skills as a healthcare professional and as a consultant for clinical oncologists who are increasingly ordering next-generation sequencing testing to identify actionable biomarkers in their cancer patients.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Interpret standard HGVS (Human Genome Variation Society) nomenclature and a tiered result interpretation system used in many molecular oncology reports.
- Define transcript and genome versions and apply this knowledge to the interpretation of molecular reports.
- Recognize differences in test design and apply to potential interpretation pitfalls.
- Interpret a variant of uncertain clinical significance in the context of clinical practice.
