Intended Audience
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Description
Blood suppliers issue market withdrawals and recalls for situations in which the safety, purity, or potency of a blood product may have been compromised, and this information is discovered after collection. These are relatively rare occurrences given the large volume of blood products collected and transfused annually across the United States. However, pathologists covering a transfusion medicine service must be aware of these processes in the interest of patient safety and compliance with federal regulations and accreditation standards.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Define recalls and market withdrawals as they pertain to blood products.
  2. Describe how a lookback process can be applied to recalls and market withdrawals.
  3. Apply a framework to determine if safety, purity, or potency of a blood product has been compromised by a recall/market withdrawal, and what appropriate next steps should be.
